Helium Health, a leading health-tech company rooted in Nigeria’s vibrant innovation ecosystem, was founded in 2016 by three forward-thinking entrepreneurs: Adegoke Olubusi, Tito Ovia, and Dimeji Sofowora. From the outset, the company set out to revolutionize healthcare delivery across Africa by digitizing clinical workflows and bridging systemic gaps in patient care through technology.
At the core of Helium Health’s operations is its flagship platform, HeliumOS – a cloud-based Electronic Medical Records and Hospital Management Information System that enables hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and pharmacies to transition from paper records to seamless digital systems. Deployed across West Africa, HeliumOS has become the region’s largest EMR solution, used by over 10,000 healthcare professionals and managing care for more than 1 million patients.
Building on this technological backbone, Helium Health launched HeliumCredit in 2020, a fintech innovation that harnesses digital health and financial data to extend collateral-free loans to healthcare providers. With over US $3.5 million disbursed to more than 200 hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers, the service enables facilities to procure equipment, medications, and infrastructure upgrades with improved patient retention and service delivery.
In June 2023, Helium Health secured a US $30 million Series B round led by AXA IM Alts, bringing its total raised capital to US $42 million. The new funding supports expansion of HeliumCredit into Kenya, with a target of supporting 1,000 healthcare facilities by 2024. The capital also fuels broader scaling of HeliumOS and strategic partnerships with public health agencies, insurers, and global health foundations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and MSD for Mothers.
