Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB), a subsidiary of Heineken N.V, is the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria. It serves the Nigerian market and exports to other countries.
NB is engaged in brewing, marketing and selling of lager, stout, non-alcoholic malt and soft drinks. Its popular brands include the iconic Star lager beer; Gulder; Maltina; Legend Extra Stout; Amstel Malta; Heineken lager beer; Fayrouz, which is a non-alcoholic soft drink; Climax; malt drinks, Maltex and Hi Malt. It also offers apple cider, Strongbow (Gold Apple); Star Triple X; Ace Roots and many others
It was a landmark in June 1949, when the first bottle of STAR lager beer rolled out of its Lagos Brewery bottling lines. The quick acceptance led to an immediate expansion with the commissioning of a second brewery in Aba. This was followed by Kaduna Brewery in 1963 and lbadan Brewery in 1982.
In 2010, NB acquired beer factories from Sona Group makers of Maltonic malt drink and franchise owners of Goldberg beer. The factories included Sona Breweries at Ota and Kaduna and Life Breweries at Onitsha. It later merged with Consolidated Breweries, producers of 33 export and Williams Dark Ale in 2014, which made it the leading shareholder of Heineken.
Following the successful merger, NB now has three additional breweries in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Awo-Omamma in Imo State and Makurdi in Benue State. The merger also brought an additional seven brands into its portfolio.
From a humble beginning, but with drive, the company now operates 11 breweries and approximately two malting plants in Aba and Kaduna. It also focuses on ancillary businesses, which include manufacturing of cans, labels, cartons and bottles. NB’s products are distributed through its chain of 26 sales depots, where it offers sales, logistics and marketing support to merchants and vendors across the country.
It also has an export business which made products available in 13 countries, including the United Kingdom, South Africa, the United States and various countries in the Middle-East.
Nigerian Breweries has maintained a consistently strong entry in this annual top brands evaluation.
