Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB), a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., has become a symbol of excellence in the brewing industry. Established in 1946, NB holds the title of being Nigeria’s premier brewing company, with a legacy that spans decades. Over the years, it has built a reputation for delivering high-quality beverages to both the local and international markets.
The brand’s journey began in June 1949 with the production of its flagship brand, STAR lager beer, at the Lagos Brewery. The immediate success of STAR prompted the expansion of operations, leading to the establishment of additional breweries in Aba, Kaduna, and Ibadan, each contributing to NB’s growing influence in the industry.
The company’s portfolio is a testament to its mastery in brewing, offering a range of popular brands such as Star lager beer, Gulder, Maltina, Legend Extra Stout, Amstel Malta, Heineken lager beer, Fayrouz, Climax, Maltex, and Hi Malt, among others, which have become household names.
In 2010, Nigerian Breweries Plc took a significant step in its expansion by acquiring Sona Breweries in Ota and Kaduna, as well as Life Breweries in Onitsha. This was followed by a pivotal merger with Consolidated Breweries in 2014, which brought other loved brands like 33 Export and Williams Dark Ale into its portfolio. These strategic moves solidified NB’s position as a leading shareholder within the Heineken group, further enhancing its capacity and reach. The expansion continued with the addition of three more breweries located in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State; Awo-Omamma, Imo State; and Makurdi, Benue State.
NB’s commitment to quality extends beyond brewing. The company also produces its own cans, labels, cartons, and bottles, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that supports its operations. This integrated approach has enabled NB to maintain a consistent supply of its products across Nigeria, with 26 sales depots strategically positioned nationwide.
Nigerian Breweries Plc’s influence reaches far beyond Nigeria’s borders, with an export arm that introduces its diverse range of beverages to 13 countries, including the United Kingdom, South Africa, the United States, and the Middle East.
The brand’s journey from a single brewery in Lagos to a powerhouse with a global footprint is a testament to its pioneering spirit and relentless pursuit of excellence.
