TOP 50 BRANDS NIGERIA® 2021
Cadbury Nigeria Plc, fondly called Cadbury is a household name in food, sweets and drink categories. It is majorly owned by Mondelez International, a global snacks powerhouse with an unrivalled portfolio of brands people love.
The firm’s flagship products are the iconic Bournvita TomTom, Buttermint and others.
Cadbury history in Nigeria dates back to the 1950s when it began sourcing for cocoa and also importing bulk products and repacking them into tins for sale in the country. Later finding increasing market opportunities in the country, the group set up a manufacturing facility in January 1965.
The firm became a publicly quoted company in 1976 when Cadbury Schweppes sold 20% of its interest in the firm. The firm’s backward integration in its supply chain led to the establishment of a sorghum conversion plant and Stanmark Industries in Ondo, a cocoa processing plant. Stanmark provides raw materials for its key product, Bournvita and is a source of foreign currency through exportation of cocoa products. In 2006, the subsidiary processed 15,000 tonnes of cocoa beans into cocoa butter, cocoa liquor and cocoa powder.
Cadbury Bournvita, the company’s cashcow and flagship brand was initially imported and re-packed locally at the current site at Agidingbi, Ikeja Lagos. Having consolidated the Food Drinks market in Nigeria, Bournvita became in 1965, the first Food Drink to be locally manufactured. The household brand was re-launched in a friendly Polypropylene Jar in 2011 and remains today a market leader in its category.
In 2013, the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) endorsed Cadbury’s Bournvita as a Food Drink rich in energy and essential micronutrients, the only to be so endorsed.
While Cadbury Nigeria and its brands are part of the Mondelēz International family, a portion of its business in Nigeria (25.01%) is held by indigenous shareholders and publicly traded on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
