Punch was founded in 1973 by late Chief Olu Aboderin, a former accountant with the then National Bank and Sam Amuka, a columnist and editor at the Daily Times. The Punch Newspaper started as Sunday publication in 1973. The contents were mainly sensational news stories and features which were meant to defend freedom of the press, the liberty of the people and act as a watch dog of Nigerian society.
The Sunday punch experiment worked, and within two years its popularity soared up. As a result of its success the daily edition began on 1st of November 1976. The two newspapers, Punch daily and Sunday punch were radical in criticizing the government’s unpopular policies.

In a May 2006 BBC survey, Punch newspaper was selected as the most trusted newspaper and news source in Nigeria.

Punch also operates a commercial printing press that provides printing services to other media houses and the general public.
