The brand story
The TotalEnergies story
TotalEnergies' presence in Nigeria dates to 1956 on the downstream side, with upstream exploration and production developed over more than six decades. On the downstream side, 2025 was a difficult financial year: TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc reported audited revenue of ₦767.63 billion, a 26% decline, reversing a ₦27.50 billion profit into a net loss with shareholders' funds falling 41% to ₦44.21 billion, though the entity also marked its 70th anniversary in Nigeria and introduced the TotalEnergies Mobility Card Plus alongside a retail network upgrade.
Upstream, TotalEnergies remains one of Nigeria's most active deepwater operators, with production centred on the Akpo and Egina fields (the latter developed via the largest FPSO vessel the company has built, historically contributing close to 10% of TotalEnergies' global production) and continued development of the Ubeta gas project, which entered its drilling phase in the second quarter of 2026 to supply Nigeria LNG's Bonny Island facility. Nigerian offshore output across the industry faced headwinds in 2026, with combined production from major deepwater leases falling around 20% year-on-year in early 2026; TotalEnergies had paused infill drilling at Akpo and Egina in late 2025 pending seismic review, with drilling since restarted and recovery expected from early 2027.
On local content, TotalEnergies has cited its Ikike project as achieving 95% Nigerian content in project execution, and roughly 200 Nigerians were trained in critical technical skills through the earlier Egina project. The company reports it achieved zero routine flaring across all operated upstream assets in Nigeria following the completion of its OML 100 Flare Out project in December 2023.
