The brand story
The Glo story
Globacom was founded on 29 August 2003 by Dr Mike Adenuga Jr., introducing per-second billing to a Nigerian market previously locked into per-minute charging, and has operated continuously as a privately held company ever since, with Adenuga retaining full ownership across the company's 23-year history. Its principal infrastructure asset remains the Glo-1 submarine cable, Africa's first privately owned undersea cable system, connecting Nigeria directly to Europe via Ghana and Portugal.
Globacom's competitive position has shifted in recent years: with roughly 23.18 million active subscribers and a 12% market share as of April 2026, it now trails both MTN, at 95.7 million subscribers and a 52% share, and Airtel, at 63.6 million subscribers and a 34% share, a change from its earlier standing as Nigeria's second-largest operator. Even so, the company recorded the highest net addition of internet subscribers among Nigeria's major operators in May 2026, attributed to sustained investment in network modernisation.
To mark its 23rd anniversary in August 2026, Globacom unveiled a new brand philosophy, 'Never Settle For Less,' alongside product and service upgrades. Chairman Mike Adenuga holds the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, one of Nigeria's highest national honours; Forbes estimated his net worth at $6.8 billion at the end of 2024, and his business interests beyond Glo include Conoil, a publicly traded petroleum marketing and exploration company, and a stake in Sterling Financial Holding.
“Nigeria's leading indigenous telecommunications operator, notable for remaining wholly and continuously owned by its founder since 2003”
