The brand story
The Leadway story
Leadway Assurance turned 55 in 2025, and by mid-2026 had confirmed full compliance with Nigeria's toughest insurance recapitalisation exercise in decades. Under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025, NAICOM raised minimum paid-up share capital requirements sharply (composite insurers like Leadway saw their threshold rise from ₦5 billion to ₦25 billion) and, following a 31 July 2026 deadline, confirmed 43 insurers as compliant, with Leadway named among the first group verified, alongside peers including Zenith General Insurance, AIICO, and AXA Mansard.
MD/CEO Gboyega Lesi framed the moment as the start of a new strategic phase, telling reporters the company was 'not entering a new chapter because a regulator asked us to; we are entering it because we are ready,' pointing to years of prior investment in technical capability and digital infrastructure, and outlining plans to use the expanded capital base to anchor larger risk programmes and deepen enterprise coverage across finance, energy, agriculture and technology. Leadway has long distinguished itself not primarily through pricing but through claims-paying capacity, disbursing ₦117 billion in claims during 2024 alone and nearly ₦500 billion cumulatively between 2016 and 2024, an eight-year run as Nigeria's most consistent claims payer, a track record that matters more given Nigeria's insurance sector overall saw claims payments jump 56.6% to ₦167.4 billion in the first quarter of 2025 alone, squeezing margins across the industry even for well-capitalised players.
Leadway's business extends well beyond traditional underwriting, with HMO services through a network exceeding 2,500 hospital providers nationwide, plus pensions, asset management, and trusteeship businesses, alongside its Côte d'Ivoire subsidiary, Leadway IARD, collectively described internally as a holistic financial ecosystem built out over more than five decades. The company has aligned its digital transformation push with NAICOM's own drive to accelerate insurance-sector digitalisation, with a focus on reaching younger Nigerians, entrepreneurs, and small business owners who expect digitally native financial products.
