The brand story
The TGI Group story
TGI Group, formally Tropical General Investments Group, is a privately held conglomerate associated with the Rajput family, with Nigerian operations dating to 1980 and a portfolio spanning FMCG, agribusiness, food processing, chemicals, real estate, and banking across Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, and other West African markets. Within Nigeria, its agro-industrial operations are anchored by WACOT Rice in Kebbi State and by CHI Farms and Chi Pharmaceuticals, alongside consumer food brands including Big Bull Rice and the Terra range of seasoning cubes and soya oil.
TGI's most significant financial services holding is its majority ownership of Union Bank of Nigeria, acquired through Titan Trust Bank, with the two entities proceeding through a formal merger completed in 2025. Union Bank's position within the Central Bank's 2024–2026 industry-wide recapitalisation programme, which concluded with 33 Nigerian banks meeting the revised ₦500 billion threshold and raising a combined ₦4.65 trillion in new capital, was a notable point of scrutiny, addressed through the completed Titan Trust merger, an arrangement industry trackers recognised as satisfying the capital requirement ahead of the deadline; Union Bank MD/CEO Yetunde Oni issued a statement in February 2026 reaffirming operational stability and the security of customer deposits amid the public attention.
On the agribusiness side, TGI has continued to position WACOT Rice as a platform for international agricultural investment and trade partnerships, including hosting a Brazilian trade delegation under the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism.
