The brand story
The Dangote story
Dangote Industries has topped Nigeria's brand rankings for a ninth consecutive year running, a streak that now functions less as a title defence and more as the standard the rest of the market is measured against. Founded in 1978 and formally incorporated as Dangote Group in 1981, the conglomerate has grown from a single trading company into Africa's most diversified industrial group, anchored by Dangote Cement's roughly 55-million-tonne production capacity across the continent, following a new grinding plant in Côte d'Ivoire, and reinforced by sugar, salt, condiment, fertiliser, packaging, and logistics businesses that reach nearly every Nigerian household and state. Dangote Cement's FY2025 results showed group revenue up 20.3% to ₦4,306.7 billion and EBITDA up 43.4% to ₦1,981.1 billion, even as sales volumes dipped marginally, a deliberate shift toward margin discipline over pure volume growth, while cement and clinker exports rose 19% for the year.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has become the group's second great pillar. In February 2026 the 650,000-barrels-per-day facility reached its full designed capacity for the first time since commissioning, and Aliko Dangote has since outlined plans to more than double that capacity to 1.4 million barrels a day, which would make it the world's largest single-train refinery, alongside a further $46 billion investment programme through 2028 spanning refining, cement and fertiliser, including a planned refinery in Kenya. The refinery expansion secured $2.5 billion in dedicated funding in July 2026, part of a financing push that coincides with reported preparations for a $4 billion initial public offering of the refinery on the Nigerian Exchange.
Beyond commerce, the Aliko Dangote Foundation's philanthropic endowment continues to support health, education, and disaster-relief work across Nigeria and the wider region, reinforcing a brand that Nigerians consistently name first when asked which company they trust most and cannot do without.
