Why The Nigerian Consumer Has Changed – And Many Brands Still Don't Get It
Post-inflation. Post-japa. Post-everything. Who is today's Nigerian really? Nigeria has always been a market that forces brands to evolve. But the last few years have gone beyond the textbook 'normal evolution.' They have been like a full reset.
Inflation has shifted household priorities in ways that were unimaginable five years ago. The FX crisis has reshaped consumption patterns at every income level. The japa wave has hollowed out entire customer segments in some categories while creating new ones in others.
Brands that are still running the same loyalty playbook from 2019 are talking to a consumer who no longer exists. The ones winning right now are the ones who went back and re-asked the basic question: who is actually buying from us, and why?
